"Precious" - Film Poster Anaysis

Picture

Analysis

The film poster for "Precious" is all in red with a large images of a woman in the centre who is shattered by something that looks like a hand. From the image we can tell that the Narrative may be about a girl but we are not told anything else. There is only a a title at the bottom of the page, Precious. The title creates questions in the audiences mind, such as "Who is Precious","Is she precious" and "why is she precious". There doesnt seem to be a lot of other writing and this could be significant in creating confusionand mystery for the audience. The word is written in white, to stand out and there are red spots which may look like blood.
The image is very powerfu, the women, we can tell it is a women because she seems to be wearing hooped earings, is a large lady. She seems to be hurt in some way, we can tell this from the hand that is forced through her body. Is she hurt? Has someone else hurt her? From where the hand is going through, it may suggest that she has been sexually abused and because it is shattered the whole of her bodyit means that she is really hurt all over. The image is all black, we dont know who she is or even if she's real and we cant see her face, creating mystery and wonder for the audience. The black on the redsuggests pain, anger and torment. This is a film about such feelings. The red could also connote her heartand the images shattering is her feelings.
From the actors list at teh top, which includes key celebrates taht are well known such as Mo'Nique. Society see's her mostly in comedies so in actual fact could this be a comedy film and if so why does the poster not reflect this. The film is presented by Oprah Winfrey, a powerful black woman in todays society, this would make peolpe go and pay to see the film. I think Mariah Carey would be used as a unique selling point for the poster/film, as could Mo'Nique and Oprah.
It seems like this film is based on a black woman because of the peolpe who are acting in it and also because of Oprah. Black people could be represented in the film, but the representation for all women from this film is that they are sensitiveand easily hurt. Her feelings seem to be all over the place, its sad and confusin. Representing black woman, from this image i gather that they are vulnarable maybe because people see them like that in real life. She doesnt have any options lift. Also the title contradicts the audiences mind, 'precious' seems like a word that couldnt be used with such an image.
The film could be aimed at young black women, because of the peolpe who are acting in it and also because Oprah is a powerful black women.
The awards sucggest that the film is doing well(at the film festival). It has won awards for acting, audience and a grand jury prize. The film is introducing new actors/actresses and promoting them.
