PLOT:
Bella Swan (main character) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen, but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Mise-en-scène
The trailer starts with this scene of calm waters . Nothing has happened ,all is peaceful. and in equilibrium As the audience we are almost welcomed into the film with this scene and we feel good about what ever is coming. The lighting is bright and calm. Before the danger begins everyone is happy and this connotes that emotions are calm composed.
As the trailer moves on the scene starts to become ire and cold. The music changes suggesting that danger is about to approach. The scene where the main character is being eyed by a blood-hungry vampire explains this.
The location is deserted with no vegetation and therefore this suggests that something bad is going to happen to her. In this part of the trailer there isn't music making us concentrate on the dialogue and the vampire breathing. Clearly that is really important. And also that gives the audience sense that the character is in great danger the fact that she is in the middle of nowhere suggested that she is alone ,lost and maybe confused .
Conventions
Unique Selling Point, Framing and Edit:
¨ The movie has been so successful because they knew their target audience, (from schoolgirls to women)and the actors were well chosen so that the requirement of the target audience is met. Good looking actors and girls will come see your movie
¨Given the target audience the trailer starts with a kissing scene to get the audience in the mood for a love story.
¨The trailer uses fade and fade out as its main edit , to give a sense that the story is on-going and it flow very nicely. Also the voices are ahead of the actual moving image this creates apprehension and its kind of uncomfortable for the audience. ¨When the characters are involved the shots are usually mid shots or close up, so that the audience can engage with them
Shots, Dialogue and Music/Sound
¨ The shot where the evil vamipe is an example of an over he shoulder shot which favours one of the characters in the frame. In this particular frame he vampire is favoured, we as an audience do not know the facial expression of the other character, which makes us scared for her.
¨ Also in this scene the music is stopped and we can only hear breathing and the vampires cold voice, this makes the scene creepy.
¨ Most of the dialogue is by the two main characters (Bella and Edward) that way we are familiar with them as they are the main characters.
The last Shot
Once the werewolf is ntroduced the audience is familiar with the story and we know that he is going to be the hero. The music speeds up and the shots are now edited so that theyf lash past really quickly (each shot lasts for 1 sec) until the human transforms into a werewolf. The last
shot is very powerful and leaves the audience with
excitement and confusion. They will come to see what
happens to Bella. The shot of the werewolf leaves the audience wanting to find out what happens.
